As President and CEO, Jennifer Gillivan has led the IWK Foundation to achieve the highest fundraising revenue in its history. She is a Board member for the Greater Halifax Partnership and the Canadian Children’s Pediatric Hospital Foundations Board. Jennifer was awarded as one of the TOP 50 CEO’s for Atlantic Canada for 2014 & 2015 as well as Leadership and Entrepreneur awards nationally for RBC and regionally for BMO.
We asked her to tell us what leadership qualities she practices most. Here are five key things she reported.
#1 All in
The work we do is a privilege. You can’t look at social profit work as a normal job because it isn’t; the work we get to do every day makes a big difference and is truly a calling and a passion.
My door is always open and I like to collaborate with my team and work through opportunities and issues together. At the end of the day I am still very decisive and clear about what I expect from the team. I am very competitive and I drive hard for great results. I set the vision and the dream and then work with my team to achieve the results.
#3 Reliable, dedicated, trustworthy and empathetic
I have my teams back; they know I will always be there for them and support them even through challenging times.
I continually like to learn from other leaders, read books and push myself out of my comfort zone.
I love people and managing teams to achieve great results.
And above all else, the one trait I believe to be the most important in leadership…
Understanding very clearly where your own line is and the line of your organization. We need to spend time teaching our kids about values, understanding what values mean in our own organizations and what they mean to you individually as a leader.
